Poster Presentation: Effect of Packing Fraction on Permeability of Powders for Pharmaceutical Processes

Pharmaceutical processes heavily rely on the use of powders, making it crucial to understand how packing density affects their permeability. This presentation explores the relationship between powder packing fraction and permeability and its significance for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

A novel approach was developed to study this relationship by consolidating powder beds through tapping and measuring permeability using an automated tapped density tester (GranuPack). Seven different lactose powders, commonly used in pharmaceutical processes, were tested.

This research demonstrates a direct link between packing density and permeability, highlighting the importance of measuring permeability in conditions resembling actual pharmaceutical processes. This understanding is critical for optimizing pharmaceutical manufacturing processes and enhancing efficiency.
