A New Insight into the Effect of the Process Conditions on the Permeability of Powders

The poster presentation titled "A New Insight into the Effect of the Process Conditions on the Permeability of Powders" investigates how process conditions, particularly the packing fraction and consolidation stress, impact the permeability of pharmaceutical powders. Permeability, a key factor in processes like tablet die-filling and dry powder inhalers, affects the flowability, uniformity, and overall quality of final products.

This study introduces a new method using an automated tapped density tester to measure powder permeability at low consolidation conditions, mimicking real manufacturing scenarios.

Results demonstrate that permeability decreases with increasing packing fraction, and the behavior varies across powders depending on their cohesiveness and flowability. Two new metrics, the permeability ratio and the rate of variation of permeability, were proposed to better predict powder behavior, offering valuable insights for optimizing manufacturing processes.
