Granutools – Formnext 2019

Filip Francqui, Geoffroy Lumay, Martin Laloux & Abdallah Rady will all attend Formnext 2019 on November 19-22 in Frankfurt Am Main, Germany.

Geoffroy Lumay will present an original method associating powder flow characterization and numerical simulations to optimize 3D printing parameters like recoater speed, blade geometry and layer thickness.  Abstract

The powder characterization is performed with the association of three measurement techniques: an improved version of the very classical Hall flow meter (GranuFlow), a powder rheology analyzer using the rotating drum geometry (GranuDrum) and a packing dynamics analyzer which is an improved tapped density measurement device (GranuPack).

This powder characterization allows first to assess the spreadability of the powder in the printer and secondly to calibrate the simulation parameters.

Then the recoating process is simulated to predict the behavior of the powder for different printing parameters and different recoater geometry.

Finally, the results are validated by testing the powder in a printer equipped with an in-situ powder layer homogeneity tester based on image analysis.

This presentation is the result of collaboration between GranuTools for powder characterization, DCS Computing for numerical simulations and the Belgian research center Sirris for the testing inside a 3D printer.
