In this work, a proof of concept is presented for manufacturing of a binder-free dry coating process using sulfur and carbon black composite powder. Different analyses were conducted to characterize the material at the different steps of the production and link them to the battery properties.
The composite powder was produced by mechanical mixing at different intensities, resulting in different particle structures due to sulfur penetration into the carbon matrix. Variation in mixing intensity was observed to influence the bulk density and the packing dynamics of the composite powder, measured with the GranuPack, correlated with changes in other properties like the electrical resistivity or the particle size distribution. This variation of bulk density also changes the mass load during the electrode production, leading to different electrode performances.
