Motivation

Our approach at Granutools is to have the best proxy for your process. A good proxy in terms of measurement method is a device able to mimic the process conditions. The stress state and the flow field of the powder should be comparable in the powder tester and in the process.

We developed the GranuDrum following this statement. Therefore, for example in the next processes, the rotating drum geometry of the GranuDrum powder tester is a good proxy: the recoater process in additive manufacturing, the rotating mixer in a pharma process, the optifiller stage in tableting, the rotary press, among others. These processes have a high flow field and a low-stress state, as shown in the image below just like in the rotating drum. The GranuDrum is a good complementary tool for the shear cell.

Principle

GranuDrum instrument is an automated powder tester to analyze the cohesion within the powder. It is based on the rotating drum principle.

A transparent drum cylinder is rotating around its axis half-filled with a sample of powder. The rotation starts and the drum will rotate at different velocities. A camera takes a snapshot during the rotation then the software can analyze the pictures stacked per speed. The analyses give the measurements for the cohesive index and flowing angle per speed. The cohesive index is only related to the cohesive forces between the grains. The average interface position gives the flowing angle and the dynamic cohesive index is measured from the interface fluctuation. The flowing angle is influenced by a wide set of parameters: the friction between the grains, the shape of the grains, the cohesive forces between the grains (VdW, electrostatic and capillary forces). The cohesive index is only influenced by the cohesive forces.

The user will have the following information:

  • Flowability
  • Cohesion
  • Thixotropy – agglomeration, segregation, and attrition.
  • Caking
  • Aeration

The trend you will observe gives information on the way the powder behaves under a certain level of stress state or speed. If the speed increases in the rotating drum (and so the stress state) and the cohesive index increases as well we talk about a shear-thickening behavior, the opposite way we will talk about shear-thinning behavior.

A cohesive powder leads to an intermittent flow while a non-cohesive powder leads to a regular flow. Therefore, a cohesive index close to zero corresponds to a non-cohesive powder.

Key Benefits

  • Measurement is simple, fast, and intuitive, easy to interpret.
  • The filling and cleaning of the cell are simple and fast.
  • The cell can be handled in a glove box, a hood, or a confined enclosure before being safely transferred to the powder tester. You can put gas, humidity in it.
  • Delivered with intuitive software, both average and variance are easy to access and allows the comparison of results. All pictures and data are automatically collected and stored for post-processing.
  • Easy data transfer and automatic report generation.
  • Recorded standard operating procedures increase the repeatability of measurements.
  • Non-sticky cell materials
  • Compliant with ISO/ASTM TR 52952:2023

Differentiators

  • The software is based on image analysis.
  • Cohesive index and the flowing angle at both low and high speeds (0.1 to 250 RPM, i.e. from 0.4 to 1086 mm/s).
  • Use of fluctuations to quantify powder cohesive forces in the rotating drum.
  • The measure of the hysteresis (thixotropy)
  • High measurements reproducibility (for example with high-density materials like Stainless steel =1.8%, or low-density materials like Excipients = 4.2%).
  • The cell can be conditioned through a glove box under a specific atmosphere (inert gas, humidity, and temperature).
  • To analyze powder at temperatures up to 250°C: GranuDrum High Temperature

Applications

As said in the motivation, the GranuDrum powder tester is a must-have for a free-flowing process. The rotating drum has multiple applications in several fields.

In the pharmaceutical field, it is used for the mixer, formulation, optifiller, and tableting process analysis. As shown in an article in OnDrugDelivery (link) in a collaboration with DFE Pharma, you can relate the GranuDrum measurements with several key parameters in your process. The GranuDrum is useful for the formulations, you can determine how your blend behaves under a certain level of stress.

The relation between the recoater process and the cohesive index. You can thus have a predictive pass or fail test for your powders beforehand putting them in the machine. Here is a link to an application explaining the relation between the GranuDrum measurement and the spreadability. The GranuDrum powder tester is also used for the powder conveying in the printer. When you combine the GranuCharge and the GranuDrum you can have a complete picture of your cohesive forces.

Other fields use the GranuDrum for different applications as the food industry, the chemical industry, or the metal industry. You can find more information in the application notes.

In a nutshell, the GranuDrum powder tester is a must-have when you want to know more about your powders, whether you need a predictive test or a better general overview.

Options

  • Environmental conditions: these have a tremendous impact on cohesion, this is why you can modify it in the drum cell to be as close as your process as possible. Put gas in it, remove the air, add humidity, heat up the cell.
  • Reduction kit, allowing measurements of small powders quantities (10ml) especially useful for pharmaceuticals and precious metals.
  • Calibration kit.
  • Standalone software license, one computer runs measurements, while another one analyses the data for time optimization.
  • CFR 21 Part 11 Compliance
  • GranuDrum High Temperature: instrument to analyze powder at temperatures up to 250°C

GranuDrum High Temperature

GranuDrum High Temperature (HT) is designed to analyze powder flowability and cohesion at temperatures up to 250°C, making it an essential tool for Additive Manufacturing and industries where manufacturing conditions differ significantly from ambient conditions.

This innovative device features an integrated heating system that pre-heats powders directly within the measurement cell, eliminating the need for external equipment and ensuring precise temperature control. With a rotating drum and high-resolution camera, the GranuDrum HT captures real-time fluctuations in powder behavior, allowing for accurate calculations of the Cohesive Index (CI) across varying temperatures.

By providing critical insights into how temperature affects powder characteristics, the GranuDrum HT empowers users to optimize material performance, enhance product quality, and make informed decisions in high-temperature applications.
